Electrical Characteristics

An explanation of the meaning behind and the measurement method for the main physical properties measured.

Breakdown Voltage

Unit kv
Purpose / Details This value represents the amount of electrical insulation the film has. Voltage is applied to the film, and the amount of voltage when the film loses insulation is measured.
Measurement Method / Standards In accordance with JIS-C-2151 and ASTM-D149.
Specific Measurement Method Measurements taken using a withstand voltage tester.

Volume Resistivity

Unit Ω/cm
Purpose / Details This value represents the amount of electrical insulation the film has. The current resistance value when a specified voltage is applied in the thickness direction of the film.
Measurement Method / Standards In accordance with JIS-C-2151 and ASTM-D257.
Specific Measurement Method Aluminum is deposited in the specified electrode pattern on both sides of the sample, and the resistance value of the current when a specified voltage is applied using a megohmmeter is measured.
Volume Resistivity = Electrode Area / Sample Thickness / Resistance Value

Surface Resistivity

Unit Ω/□
Purpose / Details The current resistance value when a specified voltage is applied to a square film surface. The smaller the value, the higher the anti-static properties.
Measurement Method / Standards In accordance with JIS-C-2151 and ASTM-D257. Care must be taken with the measurement environment, as it is easily affected by humidity.
Specific Measurement Method The sample is set on a megohmmeter and the current resistance value when the specified voltage is applied is obtained.
Surface Resistivity = (Circumference of Main Electrode / Distance Between Electrodes) × Resistance Value

Dissipation Factor (tanδ)

Unit %
Purpose / Details This value expresses the amount of power that is lost due to heat generation when AC voltage is passed through the film. The lower the value, the better it is for capacitors.
Measurement Method / Standards In accordance with JIS-C-2151.
Specific Measurement Method The sample is set in a thermostatic chamber at the specified temperature, the specified AC voltage is applied, and the amount of electrical loss is measured using a digibridge.
